M. Catherine Bateman is an Artist/Educator who explores painting in oils and watercolors and enjoys developing small functional pottery. She loves to paint en Plein Air in oils and is most in spired by the interplay of light and shadow in wooded landscapes, hoping to capture the beauty of our natural world, seeing how light creates the color and attempting to interpret. through painting, how on canvas, color creates the light.
Cathy (as she is known to family and friends) has had the opportunity to study with Joseph Sweeney through the University of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has also enjoyed working with artists Rebecca Schultz and Alex Conner through the Delphi Project at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
It is a true honor for her to be accepted as an artist member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Completed coursework includes, but not limited to an Associate of Arts degree in Visual Arts from Bucks County Community College, a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Penn State University and two master’s degrees in education certifying her in administration and supervision as well as curriculum and instruction.
As a teacher, Cathy has over 25 years of classroom teaching experience delivering instruction in Visual Arts and Technology to students in elementary and high school. At the high school level, she currently teaches at a special admit school for the arts and successfully teachers Advanced Placement Studio Art courses and college level Visual Arts courses for students in grades 10-12.
